Play Go Fish: Verb To Be
I’ve just created the first cards of a series of cards which can be used to practise questions and short answers. All of the cards will be based on Go Fish – a very popular and fun card game. These first cards focus on the verb “to be”.
How to use the Go Fish Cards
The file contains two different ready-to-print sets of cards. There are alreday two identical cards necessary to play the game in each set so print the file only once. The difference between the two sets is that the first one contains short answers and the second one doesn’t. To print the first set, simply print out pages 5-16. If you prefer the set without the short answers, print out pages 18-29. Use the option to print on both sides of paper. Next, laminate all the pages and cut out all the cards. You can have a look at some of the cards below.
I think it’s best to use the cards with short answers with less advanced students at first to help them and to make sure that they don’t get discouraged.
How to Play Go Fish
Students play in groups of 3-6. One of the students shuffles and deals 5 cards to each player. The rest of the cards are placed face down on the table (“the Ocean” or “the pond”). Players check if they have pairs of identical cards. They put these cards on the table in front of them, face up and they score a point before starting to ask questions. Now player A asks someone the practised question, e.g. “Are you hungry?” to get a pair of identical cards (players can ask anyone in the group). If the student asked, has the card they must say: “Yes, I am. Here you are.” and gives the card to the player. Then player A puts the identical pair in front of them, face up and gets 1 point. If the person who has been asked, doesn’t have the card they must say: “No, I’m not. Go fish!” and player A takes a card from the “Ocean/pond”. If a player runs out of cards, the game is not over. They just take a card from the “Ocean/pond”. The game continues until there aren’t any cards in the “Ocean/pond”. The winner is the player with the greatest number of identical pairs.
